An Introduction to Different Fields in Engineering

Every Indian child faces immense anxiety after high school when they have to choose what to study at the undergraduate level. While engineering remains one of the top choices of Indian students, many are unclear about which engineering discipline is best suited for them.

You will have a difficult time during your studies if you choose a degree that is not aligned with your interests, so knowing which field is best suited for you is critical. Even if you survive your bachelor’s, you may remain disadvantaged in professional life. You must research what you want to study before you get your degree to save yourself from future trouble. Here’s a list of some of the most common engineering disciplines offered in Indian universities:

1.    Mechanical Engineering

If you are fascinated with machines, Mechanical engineering is perfect for you. In mechanical engineering, you study forces and motion and how you can manipulate them to create physical machines.

The applications of mechanical engineering are vast. You can make a career in robotics and land a cushy job creating and maintaining automation, or you can explore biomedical engineering and create medical devices like ventilators or pulse oximeters. Another important application of mechanical engineering is in transportation: your car, the local buses, and the airplanes are all made by mechanical engineers!

2.    Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineering deals with the large-scale production and transformation of chemicals on an industrial scale. Chemical engineers develop reaction systems and vessels, ensure safety in the industrial production of chemicals, and develop new materials for other branches of engineering.

One major application of chemical engineering is in petrochemicals, where it develops plastics, fuels, and other petroleum products. Chemical engineers are also involved in developing new medicines and industrial and agricultural products, like sulphuric acid or urea. Many universities, including the American International College, offer a degree in chemical engineering.

3.    Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is responsible for shaping the world around us, from the roads in your hometown to the Burj Khalifa. Civil engineers plan, construct, maintain, and improve the physical environment.

Civil engineering has several subfields: if you are interested in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and dams, you can consider infrastructure engineering. A recent branch of civil engineering concerned with sustainability has gained much momentum in recent years: environmental engineering. It focuses on waste management, sustainable engineering practices, and mitigating the environmental effects of construction processes.

4.    Software Engineering

As information technology becomes widespread, it has given way to a new field in engineering: that of software engineering. Software engineers apply computer principles to design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software applications. Unlike other engineering branches, software engineering deals with intangible systems, but it is considered a branch of engineering because it uses the engineering process.

Software engineers’ products are almost ubiquitous in our daily lives. The website you are reading this blog on, and the PC or phone you hold are all software engineering applications. A developing field in software engineering is AI and machine learning, characterized by products like ChatGPT and Gemini.

Endnote

While engineering is very popular across India, students often don’t know which subfield to explore. Mechanical, chemical, civil, and software engineering are some of the most common branches of engineering, and most Indian universities offer a degree in them. Remember to choose your degree based on your aptitude and go for a subject you are passionate about!
