What is Expanded Embase? Is it nothing?

What is expanded Embase?

Expanded Embase does not exist; actually, it is Embase only.

How Expanded Embase came?

For the purpose of promotion from Assistant professor to Associate Professor/Professor in a medical teaching hospital/institute, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has released ―Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Institutions (Amendment) Regulations, 2019 dated 12 Feb 2020 (https://www.nmc.org.in/ActivitiWebClient/open/getDocument?path=/Documents/Public/Portal/Gazette/TEQ-17.02.2019.pdf). Previously NMS was known as the Medical Council of India (MCI).

On pages number 6, 7 and 8, it has mentioned the selection criteria of journals. It states that publications made in journals included in Medline, Pubmed Central, Citation index, Sciences Citation Index, Expanded Embase, Scopus, Directory of Open access journals (DoAJ) will only be considered for the purpose of promotion.

What is wrong with Expanded Embase?

Nothing is wrong. The name of this indexing agency is Emabase, not Expanded Embase. In addition, Citation Index and Science Citation index were also miswritten. These are actually Science Citation Index and Science Citation Index Expanded.

What is the basis of this Claim?

An RTI (MEDCI/R/E/20/00715), dated 11 Jun 2020, the applicant was Syed Irfan Ali. MCI answered it on 14 July 2020.

Request Filed With: Medical Council of India

Text of Application:

Respected Sir Madam,

In regards to criteria related to promotion of an Associate Professor to the post of Profession as mentioned in Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Intuitions (Amendment) Regulations, 2019 and as further amended on 24th February 2020 under notification No. MCI 12 2019 Med Misc 193707. I have the following query regarding the nature of Publications in Indexed Journals, accepted by MCI for the purpose of promotion

1. Is Citation Index as mentioned in this notification and accepted by MCI for the purpose of promotion is same as Indian Citation Index?

2. Are original research articles published in journals indexed with Indian Citation Index approved and accepted by MCI for the purpose of promotion.

Regards Dr. Irfan Ali

Status REQUEST DISPOSED OF as on 14/07/2020

Remarks Reply: There is a typographical error in the names of databases in which journals are included. The corrected names are: Medline, PubMed Central, Science Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, Embase, Scopus, Directory of Open Access Journals (DoAJ). The same have been sent to the Ministry of Health & F.W., New Delhi for approval and notification.

This reply from MCI has cleared the confusion and no problem exists in understanding about the indexing agencies.
